Harvie Dean Gates, 76 of Brinkley, died Saturday, March 11 at Cla-Cliff Nursing and Rehab Center in Brinkley.

Harvie was born January 15, 1941 in Whitmore, Arkansas to Richard D. Gates Sr. and Elizabeth Chandler-Gates.

Harvie was raised and attended school in Garrett Grove Community. He was a 1959 graduate of George Washington Carver High School in Moro, Arkansas.

After moving his family to Waukegan, Illinois in the early 1960’s, Harvie went to work for Johnson Outboard Motors Corporation, building motors for boats and barges. He returned to Arkansas in the late 1970’s, to help take care of his family farm after his father’s passing.

Harvie was raised as a member of Mount Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in Moro (under the leadership of Reverend Isaiah Smith). Since receiving his calling to the ministry, He has had the great opportunities to serve as pastor of Mount Olive M.B. Church in Kenosha, WI; First Baptist Church in Moro, AR; Mount Zion Baptist Church in Brinkley, AR; Mount City Baptist Church in Moro, AR and St. Matthews Baptist Church in Marvell, AR. His last church, St. Matthews Baptist Church he pastored for more than 15 years before his health failed.

His parents; his daughter Tina D. Gates, two brothers: Joe Gates and Richard Gates Jr. and a sister Susie Gadsen all preceded Harvie in death.

Survivors are: his son Harvie Duane (Sharonne) Gates of Cordova, TN; his daughter Audretta Gates-McLin of Memphis, TN; five grandchildren: Tiffany A. (Christopher) of Bartlett, TN; Ja-Wania Z. Gates at Cordova, TN; Na-Omi Waters of Dallas, TN; Dujuane M. Gates and La’Darius Farmer both of Waukegan, Ill; six great grand-children, a brother Robert Gates of Brinkley, AR; ten sisters: Ethel Privett of Brinkley, AR; Ruth Montgomery of Phoenix, AZ;  Lillie Sly of Scottsdale, AZ; Lois January and Elizabeth Hutchison both of North Chicago, Ill; Christine (Benny) Pruitt and Bernice (Spurgeon) Farmer, both of Moro,. AR; Linda (Elbert) Carr of Forrest City, AR; Ann Harris of Cleveland, OH; and Mary L. (Charlie) Thomas of Arkadelphia, AR; and a host of other relatives and friends.
